When Good Fruit Goes Bad

Fruit ends up on the ground and sits there for days. What happens to it between the time it falls and the time it's gone?

One watermelon sitting on a railroad tie, framed by the ballast, slowly going the way of all flesh. Then an orange, seen on the asphalt, drying, dying in the sun.

It sort of looks more like a dead animal than a piece of fruit
.

I never imagined this how the peel would end up. It's a sort of crystalline beauty.
