From my dining room window: cardinal momma feeds cardinal chick

A pair of cardinals built a nest in a shrub that's right outside the window of my dining room. Three eggs have turned into three chicks. I try not to disturb them.

Yesterday, I was lucky to get a shot of the cardinal momma stuffing a green bug into the craw of one of her chicks. It's not a great pic, shot through a screen and a window, but it's still a wow! for me. Click on it to make it bigger.

  1. Where are "your" cardinals? This year for the first time there are cardinals near my building on the lower east side. I don't know where they are nesting or feeding, though.

  2. The nest is in a Rhododendron bush outside my dining room window.

  3. What neighborhood? They're adorable. Have they fledged yet?

  4. I am in Mount Pleasant NY - near Pleasantville. Yes, they've fledged, and I can hear them and their parents cheeping around the house.

  6. BTW I think the picture is great. You can see everything so clearly in spite of the glass and screen. I haven't seen cardinals in Manhattan before, except maybe Central Park. I'm excited to have them around.

  7. Thank you for the compliment. The cardinals are beautiful birds and not nearly as aggressive as the blue jays.

  8. I thought it was interesting that she was feeding the baby an insect because I thought cardinals were seed-eaters. So I read an article on wikipedia. They mate for life, produce 3 or 4 broods per year, and the male feeds the fledglings while the female incubates and feeds the next clutch of eggs. The male also feeds the female during courtship and often during incubation. (I guess someone's gotta feed her if she has to sit on the nest all the time.) The males rarely but sometimes incubate. They are primarily seed-eaters but also eat insects and feed the young mostly insects. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Cardinal
