06/25/2023 - NYC Queer Liberation March 1 (catching up #8)

If you've known me long you know I've been an ally going back to college days. For many years I've taken photos at the Gay Pride Parade in NYC. Several years ago, with that parade becoming too commercial and self-congratulatory, more radical members of the queer community planned and executed a Queer Liberation March, a combination of out pride and protest. Much progress to celebrate yet backsliding in many part of the country with bans on drag, don't say gay, the repeal of Roe v. Wade, book bannings and worst of all, hate crimes committed against queer members of communities called for a march rather than a parade.

The events in NYC brought together various segments and diverse members of communities. There were the disabled, Marxists and anarchists, left liberals willing to show their face and put their feet on the pavement, people dressed the way they felt, not as someone else felt they should dress, and much, much more.

As always at an event like this, I take too many photos. I'm going to post them in batches, sort of thematically arranged. This first batch is simply group and crowd scenes. beginning at City Hall Park, Foley Square and then along the march route toward Washington Square.

If any of these offend you, look inside yourself and ask why choices about their own lives people make should make you uncomfortable. These folk are not telling you how to live your life. Don't preach to them about how they lead theirs.
