Posing for someone

I love it when people pose for me to take their picture but they aren't posing for me - they're posing for someone else, I'm just seeing an opportunity and I'm taking it. Sometimes I get the photographer in the shot, usually I don't. When I can, I try to get a picture of the photographer as well.

These two pictures were taken on the street and in a park in Manhattan. The subjects knew they were being photographed by someone.

They just didn't know it was me.

Picture of the day: No spitting

No spitting

You never know what you're going to see when you keep your eyes open and look at what's around you. If you're staring at your phone you aren't going to see much and might even get injured. So please folks, open your eyes, put your portable electronics away and enjoy the splendors of your surroundings.

From my dining room window: cardinal momma feeds cardinal chick

A pair of cardinals built a nest in a shrub that's right outside the window of my dining room. Three eggs have turned into three chicks. I try not to disturb them.

Yesterday, I was lucky to get a shot of the cardinal momma stuffing a green bug into the craw of one of her chicks. It's not a great pic, shot through a screen and a window, but it's still a wow! for me. Click on it to make it bigger.

Microclimate [A Wine Bar] - Geneva, NY April 13, 2013

Drinking wine in Geneva NY has never been as pleasant as it is now. There are a few establishments in this small city on the northern end of Seneca Lake to enjoy a meal or a drink, but among them Microclimate, tucked away on Linden Street between the Smith Opera and the Old YMCA is a gem of a place. If I wanted a place in upstate to get drunk, if getting drunk was something I liked to do, then this would be the place to do it, though getting plastered at the Microclimate would be a waste of the visit since the bar is meant to be a place where you stay sober enough to still enjoy the flavors and aromas of the wines and beers they serve, the conversations which revolve around the wines, the lakes and wineries and breweries that are one of the things that draws me to the area, and of course, James's or Stephanie's discussion of what you are about to drink.

This was our second visit since they opened about a year ago. I hope it won't be our last. We had a flight of pink sparkling wines that was featured on the menu and included two from the Finger Lakes, one from Argentina, one from Spain and one from Austria. I liked the Herman Wiemer Brut Rosé 2009 (Seneca Lake) best, and had a full glass after we finished the flight

There was a small crowd celebrating a thirty-first birthday in the back room, a great group that included a woman who runs a hand-made chocolate store, who was there with friends, her husband and a child who will have to wait a few years before he gets to sample these wines.

If you are visiting the area, this is a place you must visit. On Saturday they don't open until 4PM, so make your plans accordingly.

Radomer Mutual Culture Center Holocaust Memorial and Yizkor Service, April 7, 2013

 This year we gathered at the English in Action conference room on East 39th St. in Manhattan because the B'nai Zion auditorium wasn't available because of construction.

The Memorial was held as it traditionally is around the time of Yom HaShoah, which came early this year on the Hebrew calendar. As a result, there were not as many first generation there as usual, but it was a touching service well attended by first, second and third generation Radomers.

I look forward to seeing all of us again sometime in the near future.
