9/22/23 - Shalom Neuman at Van Der Plas Gallery - the reading (catching up #4)

Shalom Neuman is an artist who fuses elements from different realms into works that can be viewed casually if one isn't really paying attention. But in viewing, listening and thinking about what one is seeing, hearing, perhaps even smelling, depending on where you are with attention, will reward the viewer with something greater, perhaps for a moment evoking a smile or even a laugh, before getting serious.

He recently had a show at the Van Der Plas Gallery on Orchard Street in New York City's Lower East Side. To add to the art on the walls, a group of writers gathered to read from their works as well as make music, enhancing and supplementing the art that was there in unique ways.

Several of the readers are part of a loosely affiliated group of writers, musicians and artists called The Unbearables. Others are published by Pink Trees Press. Some are both.

Behind the readers some of Shalom's newest work, developed with a Czech glassblower, can be seen.

The reading took place on the Friday evening before Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur, which was Sunday night and Monday. I hope all involved were able to atone for anything that needed atonement and start the new year forgiven.

Shalom Neuman

My apologies to Madeline Artenberg. I lost the photos of her reading but the one here was taken at the gallery while she was chatting with a member of the audience before the reading began.
