Saturday morning - Lovely Autumn day - contemplating the problem called Trumpism.

I usually rise before the sun. I enjoy the quiet time before most people are about. There are few cars on the road and at this time of year, the crickets and cicadas are quiet, too. I know that the early dawn light is bright enough to wake the Carolina wrens who start calling, but that's it.

I stand at the window in my kitchen looking out across the road toward the eastern sky. It's a little light, but the sun isn't up yet and it's still night for most of the world. There are still leaves on the trees but my driveway is again filled with that sure sign of the autumn, brown and gold and red leaves, crunchy underfoot.

I wait until after six before turning on the coffee. I don't need it earlier, and I don't want to drive that pleasant post-sleep drowsiness away yet. It feels good, mellow and relaxed, something that during the work week I won't feel as often, but today is Saturday, so I can let the feeling linger knowing I can recapture it in the afternoon, and perhaps take a nap or listen to some music.

I didn't post last night because I was re-watching a dvd called "The Elegant Universe." It's not easy to explain the problem theoretical physics is confronting in making sense of both the very large and the very small within a single theoretical framework. Though this video is more than 20 years old, the problem it illuminates is still with us.

I worry a bit about what Doofus Donald Trump is trying to do. He's pushing Attorney General Barr to start persecuting his political opponents. Railing against Barr for not indicting Joe Biden and his son, Hunter; Hillary Clinton and even former President Barak Obama. There's a certain feeling of madness fed by desperation and fear, a cruelty that reminds me of Shakespeare's portrait of Richard III: seeing enemies everywhere, despairing one moment at the forces ranged against him, lashing out the next at real and perceived betrayals, then calming himself for a moment, bucking himself up as it were, to temporarily display the confidence he wants to believe he is feeling. Meanwhile, former allies no longer see him as reliable, and begin to move away, fueling his rage when he learns of it.

The shame of it is that among his most devoted followers are people who believe violence is the solution to a change of government and are moving their plots from idle talk to action plans. The group that targeted the Governor of Michigan is a warning to all of us to be vigilant. The FBI, despite Trump's attempts at making it a tool of personal enforcement, seems to remain true to the Constitution and not to a demented leader. Other law enforcement agencies will also have to stand true. The DHS is split between Trump loyalists and true Americans. The Intelligence community seems to be aware of the problem and is ready to act appropriately.

One of the ironies of all of this is that these criminals believe their actions are in defense of the Constitution. They don't get that the ballot box is supposed to be the way to make governments they want. They despair that most people won't follow them unless goaded by violence and coercion. They are right, because they are wrong.

Unelect Trump, bust the militias.

Biden/Harris for President/Vice President.

A few photos shot in pandemic-era Grand Central Terminal. There's the usual line for the Apple store, a and the scattering of people across the terminal concourse.
