Another lovely fall day in New York. Days such as this make me want to forget the insanity of our current dysfunctional administration.
The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) had some choice words to describe how the Trump administration has handled the Covid-19 pandemic in the USA, without naming anyone. The NEJM stated that they “have taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy…,” “Instead of relying on expertise, the administration has turned to uninformed ‘opinion leaders’ and charlatans who obscure the truth and facilitate the promulgation of outright lies…,” “When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent. We should not abet them and enable the deaths of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep their jobs.” Pretty strong stuff from a peer reviewed, highly respected medical journal who avoids getting involved in politics, so this is a first for them, as it was for the Scientific American when they came out in support of Biden and Harris.
For all Trump supporters this won’t amount to anything. Many of them have elevated Doofus Donald to the status of a god and their god can do no wrong. As far as I can tell, they have built altars to idols. The problem is, once a belief becomes this religious, it is hard to undo. The sTrump’et would have to fall pretty hard to convince many of them and probably some will still believe in him no matter what. After all, the false messiah Shabtai Zvi, when offered the choice of death or conversion to Islam by his captors, chose to apostatize and convert. Thousand of his followers despaired and returned to what was then normative Judaism, but to this day, there are still a scattered few who believe him.
False gods, false messiahs, they have always been with us, and inevitably they fail in their mission. Perhaps it’s because there is no god, or god doesn’t care, or worse, god likes to play jokes on the mortals.
A few photos shot today in midtown Manhattan. Yes, the city during the pandemic is still sparsely populated but Bluestone Lane on Madison Ave. has reopened and the fruit cart up the block is back, so things are looking up.
